Bite force, mandibular shape link to the maxillary forward growth

Bite force and mandibular function influence maxillary positioning; consistent proper function supports forward growth, while chronic mouth-breathing and poor function can work against it.

The back part of your lower jaw (called the ramus) has a clear relationship with the tilt of your maxilla (upper jaw). When the mandible growth vertically, the ramus tends to be shorter -upper jaw tilts down toward the the vertical plane. When the mandible growth horizontally, the ramus tends to be taller (reduced gonial angle, transformed mandibular body to ramus ratio) -upper jaw tilts toward the the horizontal plane plane (forward growth, CCW rotation).

  • Short ramus -> Vertical growth
  • Taller ramus -> Horizontal growth
